Winter hit us with a vengance! Today we are getting slammed by a winter storm that stretches from Boston to Chicago, with expected snowfall amounts of a foot or more in the area north of New York City.
I live about 50 miles northeast of the city. The snow started falling at about 6 a.m. As of 2:38 p.m. the snow is coming down in buckets. Just after noon, my wife and I shoveled about five inches of snow, but we have to go out again because we probably got another five inches in the last two hours.
Everything is pretty much closed here and there is little traffic on the roads.
The National Weather Service predicted the storm on Wednesday last week. By Thursday, winter storm warnings went up from Albuqueque to Boston. My cousin Angela, who lives in the Texas Hill Country, got an ice storm as part of this system.
The cause of the storm is a collection of three low pressure systems. One is located in the south, the other is located in the Ohio Valley over the West Virginia panhandle, and the third is located off the Jersey Shore. Between them, we are getting a blast of frigid arctic air from Canada coupled with moisture from the Atlantic. These two elements combined are brining us tremendous amounts of snow along with bitterly cold temperatures.
This storm is, as they say, one for the ages.
Sleet forecast
By tonight, forecasters predict coastal areas including New York and Long Island will get an inch of sleet in addition to the snow. Right now the snow is a dry power, which is perfect for skiing (and shoveling). Once the sleet hits, the snow will be a heavy, waterlogged mess and shoveling will be very difficult.
Hence, we are keeping up with shoveling the snow as best we can.
Cold temperatures are expected to continue through the rest of the week.
