I have a standing policy with this site to refrain from political topics. They are just too divisive and off-putting. My goal here is to bring people together with topics on photography, information technology, food, and wine. Also, let’s face it, politics in the United State has become a dangerous topic today.
If you need any more proof of that, consider what happened yesterday to Charlie Kirk. He was a man of the right who brought his conservative message to colleges and universities across the country. He was, if I may say, a counter-cultural figure on American campuses.
Now his voice has been silenced forever by an assassin’s bullet. He was more than just a polarizing figure on college campuses; he was a father of two and a devoted husband. Did the assassin consider that when he (she? ze?) pulled the trigger? Of course not, any more than a cold-blooded killer whose name I shall not mention did when he allegedly killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of Manhattan.
A video of the shooting is available online. Do yourself a favor and do not look at it. It is horrific and cannot be unseen. My hope is that this does not represent a tipping point in our politics. After the assassin showed up at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home and the two attempts on President Trump’s life last year, there are now multiple calls on X for conservatives to respond in kind. Several articles on the conservative website The Federalist are calling for the left to be “held accountable for political violence”. What does that mean? Prosecutions? Absolutely! Retaliation? If so, then we will enter a spiral of violence that begets more violence.
There seems to be this ghoulish fascination on the left with conservatives facing an unpleasant and premature death. There was the Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar, where a Donald Trump look-alike played Julius Caesar. (We all know how the play ended.) Then there was Kathy Griffin holding up a model depicting Donald Trump’s severed head.
During COVID the left was almost gleeful when a conservative contracted the disease. The questions asked often were:
- Was the person wearing a mask?
- Was the person practicing social distancing?
- Was the person vaccinated?
If the answer to any of those questions was no, then there was this notion that person somehow “deserved” it. Of course, they would never say that someone with HIV “deserved” it for their sexual practices or drug use. The left only changed their attitude when people on their side started contracting COVID.
Let us pray that our better angles prevail in these terrible times and that we do not descend into a doom loop of political violence.
